Williams Refuse Site

Changes planned for local refuse site.

Council recently received a petition from around 39 residents regarding the condition of the Williams Refuse Site. The signatories were concerned at the illegal fires being lit and also the irregular maintenance being carried out to cover and control the household refuse.

It seems that since the tip was relocated some 7/8 years ago the problems regarding the site have continually for worse. Whilst Council has been remise in not carrying out more regular maintenance the core problem with the Williams Refuse Site is the expanding volume of material being dumped with a substantial quantity coming from outside the district if the numberplates on vehicles coming and going are a guide.

Council believes that the only long term solution is to restrict the opening hours and contract for the site to be manned. This will require an amenities building, traxcavator and plant operator to control and deal with the incoming refuse for 2/3 days a week.

Over the next few months Council will be considering the number of passes that will be issued to householders, the charges that will apply for refuse to be dumped and the opening hours of the site. There is no doubt that the manning of the site will result in additional costs which will be recouped from an increase in rubbish removal charges and rates.

In the short term Council intends to construct a new cell adjacent to the current household site which will be covered over and also close the tip between 5pm and 8am each day. The implementation of a manning system should result in an efficient, tidy tip for all users and residents.
